SUMMARY OF JOB
Works under the guidance of a Professional Engineer on special assigned projects and initiatives.

Starting Hourly Rate: $15 - $20 Depending on Summer or Student in Pipeline Program (Graduates with EIT or ability to obtain EIT who enter PE Pipeline Program as a full-time employee could begin with a higher starting hourly rate)

Civil & Environmental Engineering Intern (Summer)
Work alongside Professional Engineers and technicians to gain exposure to many different aspects of civil and environmental engineering. From utility design to construction management, you will obtain hands-on training and valuable real-world experience in the water and wastewater industry. If you are looking for a way to develop your professional skills, while making a positive impact on public health and the environment, this may be the opportunity for you!

Interns will experience a variety of project areas, such as:

Utility design
Construction administration, inspection, and management
Asset management
Water treatment
Wastewater treatment
Collection and distribution systems
GIS
Environmental permitting
 
PE Pipeline (5-6 years)
PE Fast Track Program
This program is designed for current Engineering students or recent Engineering graduates to gain real-world experience and earn their Professional Engineer license in 5-6 years. Work through a natural progression of summer internships, assignment rotations, and Authority funded PE exam preparation, with the objective of obtaining your PE license by the end of the program. Gain exposure to a wide variety of civil and environmental engineering concepts and skills through real-world application. If you have an interest inbeing a steward of the environment while providing an essential public health service to your community, this may be the right program for you.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Includes the following. Other duties may be assigned or scheduled.
 Assigned projects and initiatives may include:
o utility design
o construction administration, inspection, and management
o asset management analysis
o water treatment
o wastewater treatment
o collection and distribution systems
o water resources
o project management
o GIS
o Environmental permitting
 Conducts research, collects data, analyses engineering options, and provides recommended solutions.
 Prepares documents and maps.
 No more than 40 hours per week and no more than 1040 hours per year. Hours defined by Divisional management team.
 No benefits.

QUALIFICATIONS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential

 Must possess strong problem-solving and communication skills.
 Must be detailed-oriented.
 AutoCAD and ArcGis experience preferred.
 Microsoft Office with intermediate to advanced Excel skills preferred.
 Ability to work safely and obey all safety rules.
 Ability to communicate effectively, both verbal and in writing.
 Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with coworkers, other
Water Authority departments and the general public.
 Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and
maintenance instructions, maps and procedure manuals.
 Ability to carry out instructions furnished in writing, oral or diagram form.
 Ability to work alone or in a team environment.
 Must possess and maintain a good work ethic with a strong emphasis on good
attendance, reporting to work on time, completing job assignments in a timely
manner, maintaining a good work attitude, performing all job duties as assigned
and/or scheduled.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
 Must be currently enrolled full-time in an undergraduate or graduate program in
related engineering field.
 Prefer current enrollment in Bachelor's degree program in Engineering from an ABET accredited
university.

CERTIFICATE, LICENSE, REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS
 Must possess a valid Virginia driver's license. No more than six (6) demerit points on
driving record if required to drive Water Authority vehicles.
