Post Master Research Associate - Separation Chemistry

At a time when complex environmental problems are emerging on every front, the Nuclear Sciences Division's staff, capabilities, and facilities are delivering science and technology innovations for the environment, as well as for energy and national security needs. Our diverse work addresses a wide range of national and international challenges, from providing solutions that protect the health of people who must work in hazardous environments, to developing durable new materials, streamlining industrial processes for improved productivity and effectiveness, and delivering new approaches for environmental cleanup. Nuclear Sciences Division capabilities and efforts are focused in three key areas including Environmental Health and Remediation, Nuclear Regulatory, and Nuclear Energy.

This position involves performing wet chemistry experiments, liquid-liquid solvent extraction, sorption, synthesis and characterization of inorganic sorbent materials for separation of (i) valuable commodity metals such as rare earth elements or (ii) hazardous contaminants from aqueous solutions. Some experimentation will involve small quantities of radiological materials. The candidate will initially work with close supervision by senior scientists, and it is expected that within a few months they will be able to perform experiments and tests with little direct supervision and prioritize their work activities. The candidate is expected record experimental protocols, organize data in spreadsheets, and communicate obtained results to the research team.
