Policy and Communications Intern

The Utah Afterschool Network (UAN) is a non-profit agency that works to ensure Utah youth have access to high-quality afterschool programs that keep them engaged, learning, and safe. For over a decade, UAN has been part of a national movement to connect afterschool stakeholders to a statewide system of support. UAN serves as a resource hub and supports national and statewide initiatives which promote afterschool programs with the goal of youth success. Our organization impacts over 45,000 Utah youth a year who benefit from afterschool and summer programming.

With support from the Charles S. Mott Foundation and the Afterschool Alliance and under the direction of the Utah Afterschool Network (UAN) Executive Director and Director of Operations, the Policy & Communications Intern (Intern) will expand outreach about the importance of afterschool programs to local and national policymakers to build greater support for afterschool and summer programs.

ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Create one-pagers and other informational materials for elected officials
  • Gather data utilizing afterschool program staff surveys, census data, and other relevant sources
  • Coordinate a minimum of three elected official engagement events with UAN Regional Networks during Spring 2022
  • Create collateral and marketing materials to distribute to policymakers

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES
  • Knowledge of the legislative system
  • Possess political savviness
  • Experience planning and managing events with multiple stakeholders
  • Organizational skills to manage multiple tasks, attention to detail, and the ability to prioritize in a changing environment and still meet deadlines
  • Dynamic self-starter who takes initiative
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Proactive problem prevention and issue resolution leadership ability
  • Polished and professional when dealing with afterschool program professionals, partners, stakeholders, policymakers, and executive management
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
