Community Engagement Intern

Two Community Engagement Interns work closely with the Director of Community Engagement, the Community Engagement Programs Manager, and the Community Engagement Administrative Fellow to implement the Pillow’s on-site, off-site, and virtual Community Engagement Programs in a holistic and inclusive way, while following safety guidelines around COVID-19.

From public dance classes to community residencies, Community Engagement Programs engage members of the broader community through partnerships with area organizations, schools, studios, colleges, and universities, serving participants of all ages and at all levels of experience, from individuals encountering dance for the first time to the advanced dancer. The Community Engagement Intern participates in the administrative, financial, and logistical functions of programming and interacts with a distinguished faculty of artists, a range of participants, volunteers, and community groups such as youth organizations, K-12 classroom teachers, dance studios, and groups with specific needs and interests.
Pillow-based responsibilities include—while considering social distancing and safety regulations—supporting the varied Community Dance Classes (on-site and virtual) offered during the Festival; coordinating logistics and content for special community events and group visits; curating and maintaining community-focused exhibitions; welcoming visitors with a range of personal experiences to the Pillow; and leading tours. Administrative duties include scheduling; participant registration, data collection and reporting; email and phone correspondence; database research; coordinating program information for partner stakeholders and Pillow staff; research into current and prospective community partners; and maintenance of records, materials, and filing. Community-based responsibilities include tabling at community events and supporting community performances and residencies off-site. Responsibilities also extend to monitoring facility needs and aiding with any general tasks required, not specific to community programs. Duties related to virtual and off-site programming vary depending upon the nature and location of the activity.
Candidates with a dance background and a demonstrated interest in community engagement and dance education initiatives are encouraged. Excellent interpersonal, public speaking, and community relations skills are a must. This position engages with a wide variety of public; cultural competency, advocacy towards inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility, and language skills are a plus. A positive and flexible attitude in the face of constant multi-tasking, frequent interruptions, long hours and some physical labor is essential. Candidates should be organized and detail-oriented, with excellent customer service skills, and the ability to work independently and on a highly collaborative team.
Two writing samples (e.g. professional email to stakeholder, draft of event description, excerpt of essay) maximum two pages in length each, are required with the application.
COVID full vaccination is required as a condition of employment for all staff, interns, and fellows.
