Dynamic Modeler Engineer

Carrier is the world’s leader in high-technology heating, air-conditioning, and refrigeration solutions and is investing in next-generation modeling solutions to predict the thermodynamic performance of HVAC and refrigeration systems. Modeling software developed by the HVAC/R Design & Sales Software team is used globally for the design of advanced, high-efficiency, environmentally friendly air conditioning products and systems.

As we’re expanding our team located in Charlotte, NC, we’re looking for a talented, highly motivated, and results-driven leading engineer with expertise in thermo-fluid modeling and simulation. The main responsibility of the ideal candidate will be the development, software implementation, and testing of physics-based models of HVAC/R components (e.g., heat exchangers, compressors, and pumps) and systems, providing technical leadership to global modeling engineers. Models will be part of our suite of model libraries and software tools.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Design and develop physics-based thermo-fluid models of HVAC components, including refrigerant properties and correlations for dynamic state simulation
  • Integrate and compose component models into HVAC equipment system models
  • Perform model testing, calibration, and validation based on experimental data
  • Work with Carrier engineering design centers globally on challenging modeling problems and promote the application of modeling and simulation techniques to support design decisions.
  • Advance technology at Carrier for modeling of large-scale systems integrated with models of control logic to be used for calculation of standard efficiency metrics

EDUCATION / CERTIFICATIONS:
  • Candidates must possess an MS or Ph.D. in Mechanical, Industrial Engineering, or Physics (MS with at least three years of industrial experience).

EXPERIENCE / QUALIFICATIONS:
  • At least five years’ experience in steady-state and dynamic modeling of vapor-compression and/or power generation systems, including related components such as heat exchangers and compression devices and associated controls
  • At least three years experience in Dymola or other Modelica dynamic programming environment
  • Knowledge of software programming techniques, including object-oriented methodologies, version control management
  • Strong technical writing abilities to provide high-quality documentation and standard work
  • Experience in the development, execution, and use of test plans and data to calibrate and validate physics-based models

In addition, the ideal candidate should:
  • Possess knowledge of numerical methods and solvers, optimization, and robust design techniques
  • Use methods for model convergence (scaling, smoothing), model diagnostics, debugging, initialization, identification of limits of performance
  • Be able to work as a part of a multidisciplinary team and in a global environment (our engineers are located in the US, Italy, France, Germany, China, India. We collaborate with research institutions worldwide)
  • Observe discipline with the development and adoption of standard development processes
  • Have a solid track record of working under pressure and focus on results
  • Solid technical writing, presentation, and communication skills
