Cable Design Engineer Intern

The impact the Cable Engineering team has on Viasat and the drive to produce a quality product is growing! This team is new to Viasat and has a big impact on the quality improvement. The Cable Engineering team is responsible for the creating cable and harness design packages for fabrication to support all the commercial, military and space segments within Viasat.

Our ideal candidate needs to have a strong skillset and knowledge of creating parts, assemblies and drawings using Solidworks (other CAD tool background is acceptable, but the basics still apply). They also need to be able to take ownership of the task, be strong in independent research (research what you don’t know before you ask for help), be a good communicator by being able to share what you are working on, what is completed and what you need help with (well scripted questions).

Job Responsibilities

As an engineering intern working within the Cable Engineering Group, you will be responsible for design of cables and harnesses as well as related content, for space, defense, and commercial applications. You will create solid model assemblies of cables and harnesses (3D) and fabrication drawings (2D). You will work with cross functional groups to establish wire harness requirements. Your responsibilities will be the same as the rest of the team, but at a more basic level: create usable drawing packages to support the program’s needs.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's Degree or higher in Engineering/Engineering Technology (Mechanical, Industrial, Aerospace) or related field
  • Previous experience with SolidWorks part, assembly and drawing creation
  • Knowledge of industry standard drafting practices (ASME Y14.100)
  • Basic understanding and working knowledge of electrical schematics

Preferences

  • Currently pursuing a Master's Degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering and/or related field
  • Previous technical internship experience in the commercial, military or space industry
  • Working knowledge of Cable and harness fabrication a benefit
