Analog and Mixed Signal Instrumentation Design Engineer

This position is for an Analog Hardware Design Engineer reporting into the Analog and Mixed Signal product development group. The successful candidate will develop technologies for high performance, precision analog and mixed signal instrumentation for Cohu’s DiamondX ATE Platform. Strong grasp of hardware concepts such as analog and mixed signal circuit design, data convertors and power convertors are required. The position will require laboratory-based test, debug and characterization experience. Knowledge of laboratory equipment such as oscilloscopes, DMMs and spectrum analyzers are a must. While the position is primarily hardware focused, some knowledge of programming in C++ or Python, control loops and Digital Signal Processing may also be needed. Experience within the electronics test industry especially in the ATE industry is a definite plus. As your career progresses, you will have the opportunity to work closely with marketing and applications to provide input to Cohu’s instrumentation strategies and future product developments.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Generate high level concept and functional block diagrams based on requirements from product marketing
  • Develop analog and mixed signal circuits through prototyping and/or simulations and run trade off analysis to optimize power consumption, physical board area / instrumentation density and cost.
  • Translate high level functional block diagram into detailed circuit design using Cadence Allegro Design Entry Schematic Capture tool set.
  • Work with CAD design engineer to move schematic design into PCB artwork. Requires some basic understanding or experience in artwork layout tool such as Allegro or equivalent software.
  • Generate theory of operation for circuit and define circuit test strategy including test setup, test limits and guide firmware and software engineers to develop supporting firmware and software.
  • Engage in initial lab bring up, debug and full characterization of various circuit features and validate performance against established specifications
 
Education and/or Experience:
  • MSEE preferred, BSEE will be considered.
  • Excellent academic record
  • 0-10 years’ experience in relevant industry required; Experience in any form of test equipment development is a strongly preferred
  • Strong analog circuit design knowledge, both complex IC level and discrete component/transistor level
  • Ability to understand complex design concepts and be able to communicate ideas to cross-functional team
  • Ability to understand engineering, manufacturing and customer requirements and translate to actual product design
  • Programming skills (C, C++, Python, LabView, MATLAB etc.) at some level is preferred
  • Simulation skills using SPICE or equivalent software is a must
  • Problem solving and debugging skills including the ability to debug in a laboratory
  • Proven ability to develop quality deliverables on time and provide tangible results
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced cross-functional team environment with some guidance from senior staff
