Intern - Network Engineer (Global Network) - Summer 2022 - CO

The Main Responsibilities


As a Network Engineering Intern in our Global Network Engineering organization, you will work collaboratively with our team of Test Engineers to assist with testing Networking Hardware & Software and associated design in our effort to develop new services, enhance our network capabilities or address operational issues in support of our Data Networking Services—Metro-Ethernet, IP-VPN, Internet Services, and network Infrastructure. Tasks during the 10 weeks will include testing in lab environments, managing lab operational issues and identifying opportunities for Improving our efficiency. Network Engineering interns will have the potential to research, test, and present results found in the testing environment. This will give interns the opportunity to see what every aspect of Lumen’s Network Engineering does while simultaneously improving the business. 

-Partner with the team to work on testing projects requested by the business—Network Architecture & Engineering, Product Development or Operations
-Investigate technical elements related to testing projects and associated technologies
-Attend meetings alongside peers and leadership, and eventually present results and findings
-Continuous improvement initiatives - leveraging systems/tools, standardization and process to identify how we can improve our ability to deliver for the business 
-Manage and enhance lab network environment 


What We Look For in a Candidate


Education Requirements 

o   Enrolled at a 4-year accredited college or university, master’s or doctorate level education status at the start of the internship, graduating August 2022 – June 2023.
o   Major/Degree: In pursuit of degree in Telecommunications, Networking, or Computer Science

Proficiency and understanding of:
o   CCNA or CCNP – or equivalent experience
o   JNCIA – or equivalent experience
o   Familiarity with using Network Testing platforms or tools, either dedicated platforms such Spirent Test Center or iXia platform, and the associated virtual versions, or others 
o   Familiarity or Experience with networking designs and their applications which include routing on LAN/WAN networks, Ethernet and IP technology, network troubleshooting and/or design
o   Understanding of (preferably Experience with) IP (IPv4 & IPv6) routing and switching, Dynamic routing protocols (i.e. BGP, ISIS, etc.)
o   Understanding of (preferably Experience with) designing, implementing or supporting Metro Ethernet, IP/Data or MPLS Networks, security methods and procedures
o   Hands-on Experience with (or Certifications for) the following platforms (but not limited to these): Cisco, Ciena, Juniper, Nokia (ALU/Lucent)
o   Experience with scripting/programing—Python, Java, etc. 
o   Understanding of (preferably Experience with) some of the following concepts or technologies: Voice over IP, quality of service (QoS), data security/firewalls, multicast and/or IP video distribution, next generation (cloud) IP switching and routing, SDN (SD-WAN/NFV/VNF/etc.), DNS, Unix/Linux OS administration, AAA or User Network-Access Management (TACACS+/RADIUS/SNMP), Network Management fundamentals, tools and options
o   Understanding of transport mediums—TDM (DS1, DS3, OCx), Ethernet, Wave, others
o   Understanding of (and/or experience with) virtualization, cloud services and technologies

Work Setting
o   Ideally the position will be in one of the following offices: Broomfield -CO, or Remote- Work From Home
o   Intern must be able to work 30-40 hours be week during the 10-week program (June – August)
o   Intern must have reliable transportation to/from work location (Lumen does not provide transportation to/from Lumen office locations)
