Postdoctoral Research Associate - Computer Science/Applied Mathematics

Overview:
Oak Ridge National Laboratory is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security.

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will support the Workflow Systems Group in the Computer Science and Mathematics Division (CSMD), Computing and Computational Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) to research and develop cutting-edge data reduction, machine learning, and Input/Output technologies. In this role you will work on some of the most challenging scientific problems facing the Department of Energy, creating new algorithms, tools, and technologies to facilitate knowledge discovery.

The rate of data production at next-generation computational facilities enables scientific knowledge discovery but presents a challenge to move, store, and process the data. To maximize their science return, these facilities are forced to make tradeoffs to limit the overall cost of operations. As our facilities evolve, data sizes continue to grow at unprecedented rates, which requires new research and development in data reduction. This position is to focus on novel techniques to deal with this challenge and collaborate with a team of scientists focused on achieving our goals.

Our collaborative work concerns all stages of the scientific life cycle and utilizes computing platforms ranging from the desktop to next generation supercomputers. Our group works closely with application scientist (e.g. fusion, accelerator, seismology, nuclear), applied mathematicians, and computer scientists. Our group focuses on research and software artifacts in highly cited journals and conferences, helping to enable bleeding edge science at scale.

Our research has resulted in numerous awards and software including an R&D 100 award for the Adaptable I/O System (ADIOS), and the state of the art data reduction software, MultiGrid Adaptive Reduction of Data (MGARD). Our emphasis is on teamwork, and it is important for the applicant to show a strong desire to work within a team, as well as promote her/his research.

We are a community of top researchers who are ready to tackle the hardest problems faced by the world, such as the development of advanced materials, clean energy, national security, and supercomputing. ORNL is an open science laboratory, where research staff are expected to participate in and demonstrate leadership in the international research community.

As a postdoctoral research associate, you will have the opportunity to help solve some of the most challenging problems this country faces. You will perform ground breaking research on a wide range of significant problems with the fastest computing platforms in the world. This position requires novel thinking, teamwork, and discovery in finding new approaches for analyzing massive and complex data, collaborating with worldwide experts, and publishing ground breaking results.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Make direct contributions working closely with project teams to create, evaluate, and publish novel research ideas
  • Mentor students
  • Publish papers in high-quality refereed conferences and journals
  • Collaborate with industry, academia, government labs
  • Participate in proposal development for potential external and internal funding

Basic Qualifications:
  • A PhD in Computer Science, Computational Science, or a related field completed within the last 5 years
  • Experience in parallel computing
  • Experience with storage systems
  • Previous research experience in Data Compression, I/O, Workflows, Data Science (AI/ML), or Computer Systems

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Strong programming skills in one or more of the following languages: C/C++, Python, Fortran
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
