Geographic Information Systems Specialist Trainee

Under the supervision of a Regional Forester or above, a GIS Specialist Trainee with the NJ Forest Service (NJFS) would assist technical forestry staff with geographic analysis related to forest resource management and integrate trans-program efforts linking tabular and geospatial forest inventory data. Work would include the application of classification and machine learning techniques to type forests in an automated fashion, impute a range of forest metrics using field collected and remote sensing data, assist a range of forestry professionals in simulation and decision support modelling. The position will leverage existing datasets from multiple sources and platforms to provide timely, pertinent, and statistically-rigorous information on forest conditions; information which is critical for intake of data and output of targeted information to support policy decisions regarding the state's forest resource.

Required Skills
-Experience with geospatial data and software (examples include but are not limited to: ENVI, ERDAS, QGIS, Arc)
-Experience with scripting languages such as Python
-Familiarity with traditional statistical methods and geospatial analytical techniques such as interpolation and spatial statistics

Preferred Skills
-Experience with database systems, SQL, data storage and retrieval
-Familiarity with machine learning techniques and evaluation of machine learning models
-Familiarity with distributed computing such as Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, or IBM Cronos
