Program Objective/Scope
The summer internship program within Research and Development at BD provides students with the opportunity to gain exposure to BD's process of designing and developing medical device products for different global markets! As a global organization, you may work within cross-functional or interdisciplinary teams while collaborating and supporting multiple internal partners and customers. The internship program will provide endless opportunities to engage with peers, senior personnel, and supervisors who will provide informal mentoring and coaching. Throughout our summer internship, students will build an extensive professional network, learn how to work in an engineering environment, build hands-on laboratory skills, and deliver business presentations showcasing their work. BD's summer internship program is a great opportunity to gain exposure to the medical device industry and BD’s culture.
We are recruiting for a highly driven engineering/science student with a passion for product development and working in the medical device industry. The candidate is responsible for all housing and transportation costs.
Project Areas:
Each R&D intern will be assigned an individual project to further develop technical engineering expertise. During your summer internship, you will have the opportunity to work in one of the following teams:
Materials Science & Engineering Team
Project examples include material evaluation for optimization in product development, effects of material selection on manufacturing processes and operations, and material analysis for cost reduction/savings.
Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering Team
Project examples include pressure testing of syringe products, product design for compliance to regulatory standards, evaluation of complex mechanical product interactions, and destructive testing and analysis.
Electrical Engineering Team
Project examples include system prototyping for high voltage supply circuits, RFID system experimentation to test limits of assembled design, and developing electrical systems for measurement of intricate products.
Computer Science & Engineering Team
Project examples include developing user interfaces for automated systems, assessing computational tools for interfacial analysis, and building out messaging capability between clinical and client web portals.
NOTE: Project assignment is not determined by major.

Required Qualifications:
Education
  • BS and/or MS/PhD student pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Material Science & Engineering, Polymer Science, or Computer Science & Engineering.
Experience
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
  • Ability to work 40 hours per week for the duration of the 10 - 12-week summer internship period.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Prior internship/co-op experience
