ENGINEER INTERN

As an Engineer Intern, performs a variety of entry level technical and engineering support duties as needed to assist Engineering staff with plan review, field work, traffic studies, project coordination, construction activities, and maintenance of city infrastructure.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the general supervision of the City Engineer and may receive day-to-day direction from professional engineering staff.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Assists with engineering review of commercial and residential project plans and construction drawings; checks plans for general conformance with City codes, standards, and approved plans; identifies potential traffic, parking, drainage, utility, and right-of-way issues for review by professional engineering staff.

Assists Engineering staff with traffic and transportation projects, infrastructure analysis, public works systems, development review, and capital improvement projects; gathers project information, prepares supporting calculations and exhibits, and helps maintain project files and records.

Assists with preparation of engineering reports, memoranda, exhibits, presentations, projections, and evaluations; may attend meetings with City staff, consultants, contractors, developers, residents, and other agencies as assigned.

Assists with project management and scheduling activities; tracks project status, submittals, quantities, pay items, and documentation; supports review of consultant and contractor work for compliance with approved plans, specifications, and City standards.

Assists with field reviews and inspections of public works and development projects; documents site conditions, construction progress, quantities, and potential compliance issues for review by Engineering staff.

Assists with traffic studies, including traffic counts, speed studies, turning movement counts, field observations, data collection, data entry, analysis, mapping, and preparation of summary exhibits and reports.

Assists with plan review, quantity takeoffs, project records, maps, exhibits, and other engineering documentation under the direction of professional engineering staff.

Assists with review and organization of development and capital project plans, record drawings, survey information, aerial imagery, and other engineering documents; helps identify items requiring review by professional engineering staff.

Uses GIS, spreadsheets, and other software to update and maintain City maps, infrastructure information, project tracking data, and engineering records; gathers and organizes GIS information related to City infrastructure.

Assists with plan review and project documentation for existing and proposed improvements, rights-of-way, utilities, roadways, sidewalks, trails, drainage facilities, and other public infrastructure.

Performs basic engineering calculations and quantity checks; performs field and site reviews to gather project information, document existing conditions, and support plan review and construction activities.

 

Prepares reports, letters, spreadsheets, calculations, exhibits, and analysis using word processing, database, spreadsheet, GIS, and other engineering software; organizes data for engineering studies, plan review, project tracking, and infrastructure planning.

Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Education and Experience:
  2. Completion of at least two years of college-level coursework toward a bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a closely related engineering field;

AND

  1. No prior engineering work experience required;
  2. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Working knowledge of basic engineering and mathematical principles; computerized office programs; and general computer applications. Some knowledge of civil engineering methods, construction materials, public works infrastructure, GIS, surveying concepts, and plan reading is preferred. Ability and willingness to learn City engineering standards, codes, policies, and procedures.

Skill in the use of computers, spreadsheets, technical software, organizing data, performing mathematical calculations, reviewing technical information, and maintaining accurate records.

Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; follow verbal and written instructions; read and interpret basic plans, maps, and specifications; perform accurate calculations; collect and organize field data; work both independently and as part of a team; and develop and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, consultants, contractors, developers, and the public.

  1. Special Qualifications:

No special certification or Engineer-In-Training (EIT) credential is required.

  1. Work Environment:

Tasks require a variety of physical activities not generally involving muscular strain. Physical demands may occur in activities related to walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching, lifting, etc. Talking, hearing and seeing required in the daily performance of job duties. Mental application utilizes memory for details, emotional stability and discriminating thinking and creative problem solving. Periodic travel required in course of performing portions of job functions.
