The Ideal Candidate

  • U.S. citizen
  • Valid driver’s license
  • At least 20.5 years old at time of application submission
  • High school diploma or certificate of equivalency
  • Pass a comprehensive background check
  • No DWI/DUI conviction within the last 36 months
  • No felony convictions
  • Honorably Discharged (if served in the military)
  • ​Minimum vision of 20/200 correctable to 20/20 with normal color vision
  • Commissioned and civilian employees of the Police Division of the City of St. Louis are not subject to a residency requirement but will be required to maintain a primary residence within a one-hour response time of their place of work throughout the entirety of their employment as an SLMPD employee

  • Record situations clearly and completely using sound logic and independent judgement
  • React quickly and appropriately in dangerous and emergency situations
  • Communicate clearly and concisely in a variety of situations using verbal, auditory, visual and writing skills. Must be able to project vocally to maintain order at disturbances, accidents, crime scenes, or over other background noises as needed
  • Meet the minimum physical requirements related to police activities as specified by departmental standards​​

 

Essential Functions

  • Affect a custodial arrest, including the appropriate use of force as necessary
  • Operate standard issued police equipment and weapons as specified by department policies
  • Operate a vehicle in emergency and non-emergency situations
  • Effectively communicate, both orally and in writing
  • Operate a computer terminal
  • Work a full-time schedule which may include weekends, holidays and shift work

Physical & Visual Demands

  • Be able to stand, walk, sit, reach, push, grasp, talk and hear
  • Clarity of vision at 20 inches or less and 20 feet or more with peripheral vision and the ability to bring objects into sharp focus
  • Judge distance and space relationships and identify/distinguish colors
  • Exert up to 40 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force frequently
  • Operate a motor vehicle
  • Operate standard issued police equipment as specified by department policies
  • Basic computer terminal skills
