Will waive Bachelor's degree in civil engineering for bridge inspection related experience.  Selected candidate must meet minimum requirements and have sufficient experience or education to become a Team Leader certified in accordance with 23.CFR.650.309 within 4 years of start date.

Job Location: Sikeston, MO - Alternate work location will be considered.

This position may be filled at one of the three levels based on knowledge, skills, and abilities. The entry salary is posted above, with the Intermediate starting salary of $56,712.48, and a Senior starting salary of $61,249.44.

Note for internal applicants: Successful candidates already at rates above the posted salary will be evaluated on an individual basis to determine final salary outcome.  

Why you’ll love this position: The Bridge Inspector performs federally mandated inspections on state and locally owned bridges and culverts within the district (statewide for Bridge Division), including planning, scoping, maintenance work planning, and providing guidance to the region's bridge maintenance personnel. Responsibilities are performed under direct supervision.

 

Responsibilities - What you’ll do

 

  • Schedules and assists the Team Leader in performance of safety inspections on bridges and culverts to evaluate maintenance needs and assign condition and appraisal ratings.
  • Assists the Team Leader in performing bridge and culvert inspections, including routine, in-depth, fracture critical, special, and underwater.
  • Prepares reports and correspondence, maintains and updates inspection-related data in the department's Transportation Management System database for all structures, and collects bridge related information on new locally owned structures.
  • Communicates and coordinates with local public officials regarding inspections, inspection findings, and inventorying of bridges and culverts. Communicates with Bridge Division, Maintenance Division, and district personnel to explain maintenance needs or inspection findings on state owned structures.
  • Updates bridge maps, files, and computer records; monitors load posting compliance on state and locally owned bridges and culverts; monitors progress on resolution of critical inspection findings.

 

Qualifications - All you need for success

 

Minimum Qualifications - Non-ABET

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or related field. OR
  • 1 year of experience in bridge inspection or bridge repair. OR
  • An associate's degree in engineering or engineering technology from a college or university accredited or determined as substantially equivalent by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.
  • Successful completion of a range of motion examination and a medical-physical examination.
  • Required to pass a cardiopulmonary function test yearly, attend training on the use of respirators, and pass a respirator fit test every six months.

Special Working Conditions:

  • Job requires regular travel within the district.
  • Job requires occasional (regular for Bridge Division) statewide and out-of-state, overnight travel.
  • Job requires exposure to physical hazards, health and safety risks, and/or adverse or otherwise undesirable characteristics in the environment.
  • May require operation of vehicles to plow snow and spread ice control materials.
