Engineering Intern
Location: Evanston, WY (on-site)
Duration: Summer (Typically 12-16 weeks. May continue into part-time work during semester)
About BMAF:
Black Mesa Advanced Fission specializes in research and development of Fission Generators (also known as Expeditionary/Tactically Mobile Microreactors). BMAF is under contract to the U.S. Army to develop and test the prototype for a sub-100kWe Fission Generator, which is a very small-scale electrical generation system employing nuclear energy technology (nano-reactor).
Position Overview: (U.S. Citizen and Non-Dual Citizenship Required- Proof Required)
This position offers hands-on experience working alongside experienced professionals on real-world engineering projects. Intern contributes to ongoing initiatives, requires technical and analytical skills, and participates in a collaborative, learning-oriented work environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist in the design, fabrication, analysis, and testing of systems and components
- Prepare technical drawings, reports, quality assurance, and documentation
- Perform iterative manufacturing
- Support project teams with data collection, calculations, and process improvements
- Perform research and apply engineering principles to solve practical problems
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support product or process development
- Participate in project/design reviews and technical discussions
- Present findings and progress updates to supervisors or project leaders
Preferred Qualifications:
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Graduate degree in Engineering (Aerospace, Chemical, Electrical/Electronic, Material, Mechanical, Nuclear, or related field)
- Completed at least two years of college coursework by Summer of internship
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication (verbal and written) skills
- Proficient in engineering software/tools (e.g., AutoCAD, Inventor, MATLAB, Python, Excel, etc.). DESIRED EXPERIENCE: machining tools (e.g. Autodesk, FeatureCAM, etc.), coordinate measuring machines (CMM, PC-DMIS), or modelling/simulation programs
- Practical (Hands-On) Engineer (e.g. experience with welding, manual machining, 3-printing, equipment repair/maintenance, programming, etc.)
Compensation and Benefits:
- $20 per hour
