Summer Intern

SUMMER INTERN 

 

About the Position: 

A Summer Intern is a full-time, paid position working for the summer and placed on an active jobsite to assist the Project Manager, Project Engineer, and Project Superintendent in managing the construction process. 

 

Education/Experience:  

Students working towards an undergraduate degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or Construction Engineering Technology and completing their sophomore, junior or senior year.  

Responsibilities: 

A Summer Intern functions in the role of a Project Engineer. In-the-field work includes, but is not limited to assisting in the following: 

Safety 

Know and follow all company, client and OSHA safety rules and company policies and procedures. 

Complete all required safety reporting within 24 hours. 

 

Construction 

Developing, monitoring, and updating the progress schedule. 

Interpret contract documents, research design and construction issues and recommend solutions. 

Prepare drawings and sketches to support the construction process. 

Ensure timely receipt and review of daily and weekly reports, RFI’s, submittals and shop drawings. 

Work with the project team to provide technical advice. 

Track quantities. 

Attend pre-bid meetings and bid openings. 

Production and cost tracking. 

Pre-construction activities. 

Set up project budget and cost codes. 

Prepare subcontracts and purchase agreements. 

Ensure subcontractor insurance and bond compliance. 

Scheduling and coordinating subcontractors. 

As-builts, quantity books. 

Cost engineering, cost control. 

Personnel selection, training, and development. 

Timecards, employee sign up, layoff slips. 

Purchasing permanent materials. 

Purchasing of/requisition for small tools and consumables. 

Schedule, obtain, receive, and account for purchases. 

Cost coding. 

Equipment selection and equipment scheduling. 

Compliance with all contract requirements. 

Change orders, claims. 

Project close-out, retention release. 

Quality assurance, TQM. 

Maintaining job files. 

Addressing client needs.

Qualifications 

Be familiar with OSHA standards. 

Ability to perform assigned record keeping functions. 

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.  

Must be able to travel to and live in remote construction project locations as may be required for whatever periods of time as are necessary to complete such projects. 

Must be a licensed driver with a driving record and driving ability sufficient to meet company insurance requirements and sufficient to visit job sites, attend meetings, and otherwise travel as necessary.  

Display a willing attitude to learn from others.  

Possess a strong sense of personal responsibility.  

Focus to work safely near equipment, co-workers, and surroundings.  

Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.  

Ability to work effectively in a fast paced, team environment. 

 

Physical Requirements 

Meet all conditions of COP’s drug and alcohol testing requirements as a condition of employment, including pass a pre-employment drug screen and alcohol test. 

Able and willing to work extended hours and possible nights and weekends, as required. 

Able to walk, lift, reach, stoop, stand, grasp, balance, climb, kneel, crouch, and lift up to 50 pounds frequently.  

Able to work in outside environments being subjected to weather changes, noise, vibrations, and job hazards.
