Aggies Elevated Eastern Mentor - Price Campus
Position Summary: Aggies Elevated at Utah State University Eastern is a two- to three- year inclusive certificate program for students with intellectual and other developmental disabilities (I/DD). Aggies Elevated Eastern mentors work with assigned students to set personal, academic, and employment goals and monitor their progress toward developing the skills necessary to achieve these goals. Mentors take an active role in modeling appropriate academic, employment, and independent living skills and provide direct formal and informal instruction to students in each of these areas. Mentors are the primary support for student inclusion within the Utah State University Eastern community.
The successful candidate will be assigned to work with one or two students for 10-12 hours per student per week. The successful candidate must be able to meet daily (M-F) with the assigned student(s).
Online training modules are required.
Position duties:
1. Assist the Program Director and individual student to establish a person-centered support plan.
2. Monitor student progress in all areas of the program; assist individual student with establishing and following a productive academic and social schedule.
3. Provide formal and informal direct instruction to students with ID and DD on a variety of topics related to academic, employment, and independent living skills (as needed).
4. Establish a warm and open mentoring relationship with students to provide a safe and nurturing point of contact for students to discuss life issues impacting their program experience.
5. Facilitate the inclusion of individual students in the broader campus community/activities.
6. Connect students to appropriate campus and community resources to ensure their health, safety, and well-being. Follow-up to ensure students are accessing additional services as needed.
7. Communicate directly with the Program Director on a regular basis to determine what is working well for individual students and any necessary program adjustments to improve individual student’s experiences and the program as a whole.
8. Coordinate the efforts of additional academic tutors and volunteers to support the success of individual students.
Minimum Qualifications:
· Demonstrate a passion and genuine enjoyment when interacting with students with ID and DD.
· Experience in working directly with individuals with diverse strengths and challenges in complex education, community, or employment settings.
· A basic understanding of and ability to manage potential behavior problems that may be exhibited by students with ID and DD in new and stressful situations.
· Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal skills
Preferred Qualifications:
· Currently enrolled in a field related to disabilities, counseling, and/or education.
· Previous experience volunteering and supporting Aggies Elevated students through service learning or other opportunities in the past.
