JOB DESCRIPTION: DESIGN ENGINEER (EIT)

Indirectly Report to: Senior Design Engineer
or Design Engineer
SUMMARY STATEMENT:
Under supervision of PE or SE, responsible for all or a portion of the steel design of buildings and structures that are safe and meet applicable codes, with a focus on an economical design.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF POSITION (to include, but not limited to):
- Fully understand the requirements of his/her job and the systems that support engineering.
- Supply calculations and design information to Senior Engineer, Design Engineer, Drafting, Detailing and Plan Verification departments as required. Information shall be supplied according to standardized formats where applicable.
- Learn and remain current on the latest applicable codes and industry standards that pertain to the engineering work to be performed.
- Work to improve the processes used in the Engineering / Design Department.
- Responsible for the review and overall quality of the design drawings and engineering calculations.
- Responsible for furthering his/her education through study and/or attending courses and seminars as approved by the Engineering / Design Manager.
- Responsible for following the Engineering Code of Ethics and all applicable laws and regulations
- Participate and cooperate with every department while enthusiastically advocating teamwork and frequent communication.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
- Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering or other related field degree or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
- Completed requirements for Engineer in Training.
- Knowledge of structural steel design.
- Some knowledge of building codes especially the International Building Code (IBC) and ASCE 7.
- Some understanding and applicability of AISC Specifications including AISC Seismic Provisions.
- Excellent work ethic
- Self directed
- Ability to effectively communicate with team members and customers
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Good English skills. Able to speak, read and understand.
- Computer skills – Excel, Outlook, Word and finite element modeling programs.
- Ability to prepare engineering calculations.
- Ability to carry out assigned projects to their completion.
JOB REQUIRES:
- Repetitive motion (to include, but not limited to): sitting for long periods of time, working at a computer and typing for long periods of time.
- Verbal communication, listening, using hands to handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls.
- Occasional twisting
- Vision abilities include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
