JOB TITLE: Intern - Grid Technology

DEPARTMENT: T&D Automation – Topeka General Office, Wichita Operations Center, or F&M Service Center

LOCATION: Topeka, KS 

                              Wichita, KS

                              Kansas City, MO

PAY RANGE: $23.00 - $28.00 / hour 

 

Intern Position for Full-Time Summer 2026

 

Flexible hours between Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Intern Description:

Under supervision, job requires working on a variety of assignments related to the development and deployment of new technologies into the Evergy grid.  

 

Job tasks include but not limited to:

  • Developing new technologies that will result in efficiency improvements in the operations, maintenance and reliability of the company distribution systems.
  • Development and deployment of new communicating technologies, select system automation initiatives, and the development of cross-platform integration with various company databases and systems.
  • Work closely with stakeholders to incorporate changes to the design standards for the new technologies which will allow for new technology deployments as a normal course of work.  
  • Work closely with stakeholders to insure that persons who interact with the new equipment are cognizant of all aspects of the safe operation and maintenance of the new equipment.  
  • Providing expert insight into possible methods for leveraging data to be used in the directed maintenance program which will ultimately allow for a reduction in unplanned maintenance activities, increased system reliability and more timely system restorations. 
  • Developing specialized spreadsheets, databases and reports to aid in stream-lining group processes.
  • Support various grid technology initiatives including monitoring key performance indicators and development of reporting tools & reports.
  • Utilizing various software tools to create specialized reports from data contained in company databases.

Education and Experience Requirements:

Candidates must be currently enrolled in a university pursuing a degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering, with preference given to candidates who have completed circuit and programming related coursework.

 

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities Required:

  • Excellent communication, teamwork, and technical skills.
  • Strong math, business/technical writing and technical reading skills.
  • Ability to apply an analytical approach to technical thinking.
  • Experience in the use of computer-aided drafting, spreadsheets, word processing, and applicable engineering software.
  • Experience in the use of programming languages such as python, java, and C++. 
  • Awareness of database structures such SQL and noSQL. 
  • Experience in power systems analysis. 
  • Skills are necessary in planning, organizing, oral and written communication, prioritizing and team building.
  • Ability to quickly learn and become proficient in use of new computer software and programs.

 

Working Conditions:

Office conditions with continuous attention to performing work of high quality and accuracy in a safe manner. With use of a company vehicle, occasional field inspections/observations will involve work outdoors within driving distance of work location.
