What I wish was different

Software Engineering Intern

May - August 2017 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

I got a decent amount of autonomy and have an effect on things that so many people use daily. It's really cool to be a young student who is treated similar enough to a full time employee, especially for a company with so much global reach.

What I wish was different

I sometimes wish it was a little more fast-paced, but I realize that comes with working at most large companies.

Advice

I would say to be confident with your skills but at the same time don't be scared to ask questions when you don't know. You may feel stupid sometimes but other people are not thinking that about you.

Engineering Practicum Intern

May - August 2017 • Mountain View, CA

What I liked

Work with another intern, program is focused on learning and gaining experience so it's less stressful than a SWE internship.

What I wish was different

It really depends on your host what your experience is so I wish there was more consistency in each intern's experience here.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions and go to a lot of events!

Engineering Practicum Intern

May - August 2017 • San Bruno, CA

What I liked

I got to work on a team where I was treated as an equal. I was treated like a full time software engineer. My hosts were super supportive and helped me adjust to coding in industry rather than for class. I learned so much from my hosts and my experience in general! I also loved all the other programs Google had to offer. They helped foster a sense of community amongst all the interns as well as between the interns and the full time employees.

What I wish was different

Nothing!

Advice

Take advantage of everything Google has to offer. Participate in the mentor program, meet other Googlers, etc.

Associate Product Marketing Manager Intern

June - August 2017 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

I loved how entrepreneurial the role was and how interns were given a great amount of autonomy and control over their projects to bring them from beginning to finish, truly making an impact on the team by the end of the summer. Additionally, the culture is truly a magical one that made me excited about going to work everyday to interact with so many amazing people and work on such exciting projects.

What I wish was different

I wish the conversion process for full-time offers after the internship was a bit smoother as the process has taken a long time and been difficult to manage with other competing deadlines that occur when OCR is so early at Penn.

Advice

Be ready to navigate ambiguity and come in with a ready-to-learn attitude but also ability to roll your sleeves back and create your projects, taking initiative and asking to be involved in as many projects and tasks as you have bandwidth for - this is something that they definitely admire and look for when evaluating performance at the end of the summer.
